THERE IS NO NEED TO BOOK FOR ANY OF THE NEW CLASSES !

Please just come in on the day a new class starts and enjoy! Should you wish to join an existing class, please contact us for a private catch-up lesson with the instructor who takes it, unless the class is advertised as a drop-in class.

Guide to Dance Classes

Ballroom / Latin
The splendour, the glitter and the glamour of Ballroom and Latin dancing (as seen on BBC's "Strictly Come Dancing") has never been easier to master! Our team of experienced instructors will guide you through the basic steps of the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba and Jive, and light your dancing star forever! Ballroom and Latin can be enjoyed in both formal and informal setting, at parties and dinner dances, and will always be popular as one of the most elegant social pastimes.

Salsa / Latin
Let the intoxicating beat of Cuban, Brazilian and Carribean music blow you away! In class, we teach the basics of Cuban salsa, Merengue and Mambo, progressing from simple steps to some more advanced moves that will let you have fun whether you are just dancing in a club or at salsa socials and special events. Formal Latin dances such as Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba and Jive are also introduced later on to enable you to enjoy the refinement and sophistication of Latin, from dinner dances to the competitive dance floor.

Street Dance
Street dance started appearing in clubs in the USA in the late 1970s and from then on with the help from films such as "Step Up" and groups such as "Diversity" has grown in popularity, causing a great demand in dance schools across the UK. Be prepared to be pushed to your limit as you learn the basics of street and hip-hop in beginners classes whilst trying the more complicated moves as you progress with your class!!

Zumba® Fitness
Zumba® Fitness was created in the mid-90s by Colombian native Alberto "Beto" Perez, a celebrity fitness trainer and choreographer for International pop superstars. Inspired by the traditional salsa, samba and merengue music he grew up with, Beto paired his favourite pulsating Latin rhythms with the red-hot international dance steps his clients loved and Zumba® Fitness (Spanish slang for "to move fast and have fun") was born! Since then, Zumba® Fitness has become one of the fastest-growing, dance-based fitness crazes in the world, with people of all ages falling in love with its infectious music, easy-to-follow dance moves, and body-beautifying benefits.

Argentine Tango
Learn the mysterious grace and passion of this classy dance form. From its humble origins in cafes and sleazy bars of Buenos Aires in the 1860s, the Argentine Tango has travelled a long way into the ballrooms and the world stage of today. In class, you will be learning the basic principles of tango, such as the embrace, correct walking action, creating spatial pathways and correct leads, and also many clever and intricate set elements that Argentine Tango is so famous for.

Rock'N'Roll
Come along and have some fun in our energetic Rock'N'Roll class. Starting from the very basics, we will take you through many vigorous moves that will let your dancing star shine in a club and a formal social dance alike! The combinations will eventually incorporate kicks/flicks/twists and some easy yet effective basic lifts/drops - the possibilities are endless!

Ballet
Classical Ballet is the grand foundation for all the Western European dance forms, and is the epitome of grace, control and refinement. The Open Level ballet class is for anyone with some prior experience of basic ballet principles and terminology who would like to improve aspects of their technique or keep their fitness levels up in a balanced and highly aesthetic way.

Tap
Bring in 'da noise, bring in 'da funk! Tap is for prople who like to make music with their feet. In this American hoofing-influenced class, you will learn the basics of how rhythm is created through transference of weight and the action of body-leg-foot. We will be learning basic tap steps and ways of combining them into spectacular powerful sequences, as well as the basics of improvisation. Please remember to bring your tap shoes with you - the louder you sound the better!

Jazz
Based on a fusion of African rhythms and classical European aesthetic, jazz is the dance form of all the classic West End and Broadway musicals, and is a great way to improve co-ordination, fitness and flexibility. We will be starting each class with a stretching session, followed by learning set routines influenced by various forms of jazz, such as lyrical jazz, Latin jazz and street jazz.

Contemporary
Rather than being based on a particular movement vocabulary, Contemporary dance is a form that seeks to explore the body and its possibilities for expressive and powerful movement, with broad influences from yoga, physiotherapy, martial arts, and even everyday "pedestrian" movement. Contemporary dance performance usually explores a certain notion, idea or image, and can be enjoyed on both the emotional and the intellectual level. In our release-based class, you will be introduced to somatic imagery and basics of Laban-Bartenieff approach to understanding of movement. This class will be useful not just to dancers, but also actors and people who play sports or are involved in any other skilled movement activity.

What to wear

Ballroom / Latin / Salsa / Argentine Tango
Please wear comfortable clothes that you will feel free and confident to move in. We recommend wearing supportive shoes with soles that will slide freely on wooden floors, preferably no sling backs or backless shoes. You might eventually like to purchase a specialist dancing shoe from our extensive range available at the City-Limits Shop. Proper dancing shoes do make a difference for your comfort, balance and safety.

Street / Jazz / Rock'N'Roll
These classes are quite vigorous and require completely non-restrictive clothes. Please wear trainers, dance sneakers or jazz shoes for footwear.

Tap
If you've never done tap before, it may seem like a big commitment to buy your tap shoes straight away. However, you'll find that you will enjoy class so much more for being able to hear yourself and not just the teacher! We have a range of budget tap shoes available at City-Limits Shop. Ask for style PTAP1 or CTAP1 and a pair of Teletone heel taps. There is a cobbler inside Morrisons in Hillsborough that will be able to fit the taps onto your shoes for you, as we sadly do not have a workshop to do that in the house. In terms of clothes, please wear something comfortable and remember, you won't just be moving your feet, the whole body gets involved!

Ballet
We do not have a dress code for adult ballet classes. Please wear tight fitting clothes that allow you to see your body line and ballet shoes. At City-Limits Shop, we sell full-sole ballet shoes in pink and black leather and pink satin. If you require wide fitting or prefer split-sole shoes, we are able to order them for you to arrive within 3-4 working days.

Contemporary
Please wear soft non-restrictive (baggy) clothes. We work in barefoot or thick socks. The socks, however, do tend to slip on the floor when travelling around, and it may significantly restrict you in class.

Dance Workout / Zumba
This is a dance workout rather than an aerobics class. Please wear exercise clothes, trainers or dance trainers/jazz shoes and please bring water to class with you.
